עקב - "Because"

Weekly parashah #46: Ekev

<< Previous (Va'etchanan) Next (Re'eh) >>

Deuteronomy 7:12

"Then it shall come about, because you listen to these judgments and keep and do them, that the LORD your G-d will keep with you His covenant and His lovingkindness which He swore to your forefathers.

The Hebrew Word

Ekev (Strong's #6118) literally means "a heel" (as the rear part of a foot) and figuratively means "the last of" something. The implication is one of "result" or "reward". It is used only 14 times in 14 verses in the Tanakh.

First use in Scripture

The first time ekev is used in Scripture is in Genesis 22:18.

Genesis 22:18

"In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, [as a reward] because you have obeyed My voice."

Last use in Scripture

The last time ekev is used in Scripture is in Amos 4:12.

Amos 4:12

Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, O Israel."
